Earlier this year, I decided to study the Bible chronologically to savor every chapter of God's story. Today I read Leviticus 18. Tonight I am still tasting that chapter in my mouth, and it's weighing heavy on my heart.
Leviticus 18:21 says, "You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord."
Before this morning, I had no idea who Molech was. Now I wish I didn't know because I cannot get Molech off my mind.
Molech was a god of the Ammonites, neighbors of the Israelites. The pagan god was worshipped by heating a metal statue representing the god until it was red hot, then by placing a living infant on the outstretched hands of the statue, while beating drums drowned out the screams of the child until it burned to death (David Guzik, Study Guide for Leviticus 18).
I imagine that disturbs you, but this should disturb you even more...
Americans worship Molech every time they support pro-choice.
Sound like I'm stretching the truth? Consider this, Molech worship was an ancient version of birth control by infanticide to eliminate illegitimate or unwanted children. The men and women who practiced it used the drums to deny the cries of the baby so their hearts would not be moved.
My gut churns at the comparison between offering a child to Molech and abortion, which is also used to eliminate illegitimate or unwanted children. And much like the drums used in Molech worship, supporters of this infanticide try to drown out the truth. Abortion is painful.
It's painful for the baby. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a part of the U.S. National Institute for Health, "there is substantial evidence that the process of being killed in an abortion will cause the unborn child pain." (Stuart WG Derbyshire, "Can Fetuses Feel Pain?").
And it's painful for the parents. The American Pregnancy Association says abortions often result in Regret, Anger, Guilt, Shame, Sense of loneliness or isolation, Loss of self confidence, insomnia or nightmares, Relationship issues, Suicidal thoughts and feelings, Eating disorders, Depression & Anxiety.
Abortion is sacrificing a child while ignoring their cries. Abortion is modern day American Molech worship.
Promise for today:
I am the LORD your God. According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 18: 3
