This morning we are waking up in Haiti! I don't think Mackenzie has stopped smiling since we landed here. I think she feels fulfilled here seeing the place she has held close to her heart for so long.
We traveled most of the day yesterday. When we got to New Life Children's Home where we are staying, we were greeted with an authentic Hatian dinner of griot (you can click on that sentence for a picture of the fried pork dish).
Mackenzie acted much like a typical American nine year old, timid to try the new food. The other seven of us traveling were not so timid. We ate every bite! It was delicious.
After dinner we walked over to the children's side of the home where they house almost 100 children who have been rescued from terrible conditions mostly in the mountain areas around Port Au Prince. Quickly the children here found common ground with Mack despite different languages and lifestyles. It really proved to me that kids are all kids no matter what their stories in life.
